Different types of Chili Peppers

Chili Peppers

There are two main types of peppers from the Capsicum annuum family, the chili pepper and the bell pepper, sometimes called the sweet pepper.

The main differences between them are their shapes and the fact that the bell pepper doesn’t produce capsaicin which the part of the pepper that gives the hot sensation when placed in the mouth.

Both varieties are used in cooking with the chili pepper being used to spice food whilst the bell pepper is used in salads.

I just love cooking and eating hot food, especially food cooked with chili peppers.

Here are some of the more popular chili varieties;

Jalapeños – a very hot chili used fresh, pickled or dried.

Habañero – extremely hot with a fruity flavor usually orange in color.

Scotch Bonnet – red hot chili yellow, red or green.

Bird’s-eye – small and powerful chili used in Thai cooking.

Poblano – mild dried chili used in Poblano sauce.
